The Optician is a portrait of Oleg (Alex) and his eyeglass shop on Third in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles. He has been in the business of collection and sharing his passion for eyeglasses for 30 or more years. Nothing is priced and the collection can be overwhelming for a first timer—the collection, its history, the exquisite frames must be accessed with Alex as an esoteric guide. The unspoken part just off screen—but always present—is the rapid gentrification of Los Angeles. The pushing out of the unique, niche, eccentric, immigrant-owned, and perhaps slightly dustier shops for a cold slick monoculture of instagrammable businesses.
